Ep. 005 : What Does Treatment for Suicide Look Like?
There are many forms of treatment for suicide, which may include medication, talk therapy, or a combination of the two. In a worst case scenario, calling 911 or hospitalization may be necessary. Treatment for suicide will depend on a variety of factors, including: Where a person is on “The Ramp”? How lethal is their plan? How imminent is the risk? Do they still have hope for the future? How long have they felt this way? Was there a triggering incident?
Treatment will also look different person to person, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Thoughts about suicide should be taken seriously and should not be dismissed. Even if you’re not sure the threat is genuine, inquire further. Treatment for suicidal thoughts should not be delayed. The actual treatment often begins by addressing underlying issues that contribute to one’s distress. Medications may be used to manage some of the symptoms associated with thoughts of suicide, but Cognitive Behavioral Therapy , which does not involve medication, is one of the most effective tools in treating suicidal thoughts.
