As we’ve discussed in previous posts on “The Ramp”, the descent into the “Valley of Suicide” can move slowly for some and very quickly for others from passive suicidal thoughts, to starting to form a plan, and finally to implementing a suicide plan. Regardless of the time frame, if you or someone you care about is beginning to put in motion a plan to end your/their life, the time for action is NOW.
Do not wait. Seek professional mental healthcare.
- Don’t Delay! Help is needed RIGHT NOW, not next week or next month.
- Call or text the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-TALK (8255). This is a national 24/7 free service.
- If the person already has a mental health provider, call the provider for assistance.
- Hospitalization may be necessary, but you can leave that decision to the mental health professionals. You do not need to be an expert.
If they are implementing a suicide plan right now, call 911.
If you or someone you love is ready to act on their plan, call 911. This is an emergency.
In closing…
Even in this dark hour there is still hope and chance for intervention. It is imperative that an individual who has begun implementing a suicide plan be seen by a mental health professional ASAP. Do not settle for an appointment a week or a month out. Let the mental health professional know the issue involves thoughts of suicide. Not every counselor is skilled at working with individuals this far down the ramp. When making an appointment for someone who is ready to make a suicide attempt, you will want to work with a professional who has specific experience in working with suicidal persons.
